PETG plastic

What is PETG?

      Polyethylene phthalate (PET) is the most commonly used plastic in the world. This polymer is best known as a material for water bottles. It is used in the manufacture of fabrics for clothing, food containers. While raw PET is rarely used in 3D printing, its PETG variant is a popular filament for 3D printers.

Additional Information

      The letter “G” in PETG stands for glycol modification. This thread is more stable, less brittle, easier to use than the main form of the polymer. For this reason, PETG is considered a good compromise between ABS and PLA, the two most commonly used plastics for 3D printers. PETG is more flexible and durable than PLA and easier to print than ABS. When using PETG, there are three things to keep in mind that all 3D printing enthusiasts should consider:

1. PETG is hygroscopic, that is, it absorbs moisture well from air. Since this adversely affects printing, it is recommended that you store the thread in a cool, dry place.

2. PETG is easier to scratch than ABS. Polyethylene Methylene Terephthalate (PETT) is another PET option. This is a thread for a 3D printer, a little tougher than PETG. The reason for its popularity is good transparency.

Properties of PETG filament (PET, PETT):

·     strength –high;
·     elasticity – medium;
·     durability – high;
·     complexity of use – low;
·     print temperature – 220-250ºС;
·     table temperature – 50-75ºС;
·     shrinkage or warping – minimal;
·     solubility – insoluble;
·     food safety – it is recommended to study the manufacturer's instructions.

When should I use the yarn for a PETG 3D printer (PET, PETT)?

      PETG is a versatile tool, but it differs from many other types of filaments for 3D printers in its flexibility, strength, melting point and impact resistance. This makes it an ideal plastic for use with objects that may experience constant or sudden stress, such as mechanical parts, printer parts, and protective components.
